As the M-A Bear News, we promise to provide an informative and objective student-managed news forum devoted to securing a voice for the students. We intend to report relevant news in a truthful and accurate manner, despite its potentially controversial nature or effects. Although any advice regarding the publication of a story will be considered, the editorial board will ultimately make all final decisions. We encourage M-A students and staff to read and contribute to what aspires to be M-A’s most compelling and accurate source of information.
The following editorial guidelines apply to work produced by M-A Bear News staff.
The Editorial Board, which consists of the Webmasters, front page editor, editors-in-chief, section editors, and assistant editors will determine the content of the Web site and all unsigned editorials; therefore, the material may not necessarily reflect the opinions or policies of Sequoia Union High School District or Sequoia Union High School District faculty, administrators or the Board of Education. Signed columns or reviews represent only the opinions of individual authors.
The adviser of M-A Bear News will supervise production and offer advice and instruction to help the staff meet professional standards of English and journalism, and to maintain the other provisions as required by California Education Code section 48907. The adviser will not determine the content of the site.
School officials are not responsible for the content of the publication; consequently M-A Bear News will not be reviewed, restrained or withheld by school officials prior to publication. Because the staff will control the content of the publication, it will therefore also take financial and legal responsibility for what is published.
The M-A Bear News staff will work to meet the standards set by the Canons of Professional Journalism developed by the Society for Professional Journalists. These standards include a code of ethics concerning accuracy, responsibility, integrity, conflict of interest, impartiality, fair play, freedom of the press, independence, sensationalism, personal privacy, obstruction of justice, credibility and advertising.
The M-A Bear News staff will not alter the content of news photos through technological or other means. Image enhancements for technical clarity are always permissible. Photo illustrations are acceptable, but should be clearly labeled. Likewise, the staff will not stage or re-create news events for photographs.
The M-A Bear News staff will not publish images or other work without properly crediting the creators of that work and obtaining reprint/rebroadcast permissions of copyrighted work. M-A Bear News will not engage in plagiarism in any form.
In the interest of representing a broad range of views, M-A Bear News staff will make efforts to avoid having a staff member interviewing his or her friends or classmates whenever possible and instead will seek out a broad range of sources for any story. The M-A Bear News will strive to reflect the diversity at M-A.
The M-A Bear News is an open forum for student and other public expression and the discussion of issues of concern to its audience.
Therefore it welcomes feedback, including letters to the editor, guest columns and other expressions of opinion from students, faculty, administrators, community residents and the general public.
The M-A Bear News staff will work to maintain the intent of feedback providers but reserves the right to edit all such submissions for length, grammar, potential libel, invasion of privacy, obscenity, and other factors consistent with California Education Code section 48907. In addition, the staff reserves the right to edit feedback to eliminate coarse language, racism, sexism, homophobia, misstatements of fact, comments without an obvious connection to the target story, advertising, personal attacks and material that otherwise exposes members of the M-A community to public scorn, embarrassment or ridicule, and any material we deem insensitive or inappropriate. Not all of the letters will be published; letters are published at the discretion of the editors, with input from the staff’s adviser, based on the above-stated principles and on individual circumstances.
The M-A Bear News staff strongly encourages posters of feedback to use their real names, however staff members generally do not have the resources to verify the identities of people submitting feedback. The M-A Bear News staff has an optional identity verification system for M-A students and faculty. The M-A Bear News staff may require verification of identity for people who post negative comments about members of the M-A community.
Letter writers who do not complete all fields on the feedback form should expect that their comments may not be published.
The M-A Bear News staff reserves the right to track IP addresses of people posting comments.
The M-A Bear News staff reserves the right to change this policy, its impact on all entries in our feedback database, and treatment of any individual piece of feedback without notice.
Advertisements on the M-A Bear News site cost $100 for one month, $400 for one semester, or $700 for the school year (both semesters). Regarding size and placement of the advertisement, please contact the M-A Bear News staff via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
