A Slice of Summer: Remembering BFD 2010

As it does every year, Live 105.3’s BFD music festival marked the beginning of summer with an explosion of spilled beer, masses of sunburned and tattooed skin, endless fist pumping, and some really quality music.  With school almost upon us, BFD 2010 will be looked upon with nostalgia as a day where we all happily took for granted the expanse of blissful summer freedom before us.  But, instead of letting thoughts of school consume you, we here at M-A Bear News are offering you a taste of BFD – a slice of summer to help you enjoy your last days of freedom and survive the year to come.

Spoon: The festival stage drew a large crowd as Spoon lead singer Britt Daniel crooned such favorites as “I Summon You” and “The Underdog.”  Despite its’ somewhat indie reputation, you don’t have to be a hipster to appreciate Spoon’s light and sometimes quirky sound.

Remember BFD with the classic “I Summon You” and further face the school year with “Anything You Want.”

Dan Black: A hyperactive performer from across the Atlantic, Dan Black repped Britain with a crowd-pleasing performance in the Subsonic Tent.  Black has a style slightly reminiscent of rapper Kid Cudi, and didn’t fail in delivering an upbeat and highly entertaining set.  He also gets an A+ for crazy dance moves.

Remember BFD with the classic “Ecstasy” and further face the school year with the “Symphonies” remix featuring Kid Cudi himself.

Matt & Kim: Famous for their wild antics onstage, the husband and wife duo Matt & Kim were by far the most memorable performance, and arguably the best.  Their insane energy was infectious throughout the Subsonic Tent, some of the more outstanding moments being Matt climbing across the 15-foot speakers, and Kim deciding to booty dance on top of the crowd.  My only regret is their failure to start stripping during “Lessons Learned” (stripping off clothing is a staple of that song which was brought on by the music video).

Remember BFD with the classic “Daylight” and further face the school year with “Lessons Learned” (but try to refrain from stripping in class).

Sublime: Although many remain skeptical of the So-Cal band after the death of leader singer Bradley Nowell, Sublime still managed to draw the biggest crowd of the day at the main stage.  As it turns out, replacement lead singer Rome Ramirez has a voice eerily similar to that of Nowell, and all present were not disappointed by the smooth sound of the California reggae.

Remember BFD with the classic “Badfish” and further face the school year with the easy summer sound of “Summertime.”

Silversun Pickups: A band originating from Los Angeles, the Silversun Pickups were surprisingly endearing, mentioning between songs how truly awed they were by the size of the crowd.  Although it was difficult to appreciate their stage presence from anywhere but the VIP seating, they were amazing in the sense that their sound was almost identical to their CD.

Remember BFD with the classic “Panic Switch” and further face the school year with “Common Reactor.”
