As Joseph and I prepare our respective year-end lists, I thought I would take a moment to discuss the idea of year-end lists. Personally, I am not a huge fan. As I’ve realized in my attempts to rank one album over the other, these lists tend to force a subjective ratings system on the music of the year, while stating it as gospel. Every blog or magazine has its own biases and tastes. Also, many of these blogs play “follow-the-leader,” with similar top fives.
However, if you must look at year-end lists, I would suggest Metacritic’s aggregation of all the big blog posts end of year lists. They assign individual spots on the lists a certain point value, and then add up the points to come up with a more all-encompasing list.
