In a neighborhood where many families are used to extravagant spending habits, it is easy to overlook the canned food drive and the families who struggle to put a meal on the table. Over 400 families this winter will enjoy nice meals because of the success of the M-A canned food drive. Posted at 8 different grocery stores, Menlo-Atherton students spent countless hours canning.

The canned food drive started about 13 years ago and, over time, the M-A food drive has only improved. This year M-A partnered up with Second Harvest, found through other schools. In an interview with Kelly Todd, an M-A staff member, she mentioned that “people choose the M-A canned food drive because of the history and tradition.”

Regarding the teachers who offer incentives in exchange for cans, Todd replied,” It is left up to the individual teacher, but I hope it is out of the goodness of the students.” The number of students, teachers, and parents involved in the canned food drive made it a huge success. According to Todd, the leadership students in 4th, 5th, and 6th period were the “guiding force and brains behind this organization.” Though we did not collect as many cans as planned, the canned food drive still helped many people. Menlo-Atherton hopes to continue the partnership with Second Harvest and reach our goal next year!
