News: What Has Obama Done So Far?

Though he has disappointed some voters, Obama does have a significant list of accomplishments from his first four years in office.

As election day approaches, many voters across the nation remain uninformed about the candidates, their positions, and their accomplishments. Through all the propaganda and political advertisements, it is important to remember what Obama has actually done during his term as president. Though it is essentially impossible to list every reform or new policy passed in the last four years, here are the biggest bills and policies for which Obama has been responsible while in office.

Healthcare Reform (Obamacare)

  • Fought for and passed health care reform that provides coverage to 32 million people who were previously unable to afford/qualify for coverage
  • Created subsidized coverage  for people denied coverage because of pre-existing conditions
  • Expanded medicaid to cover lower income individuals
  • Cut medicaid prescription costs by up to 50%
  • Put subsidies in place for lower income families
  • Added legislation that capped insurance premiums based on income
  • Put in place a safety net for those who lose their job, allowing them to automatically switch to a government program
  • Overturned the ban on government funding to family planning organizations based on if they offer or give information on abortions

 

Economic Reform

  • Repealed Bush administration restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research
  • Introduced and implemented a stimulus plan, which includes $18 billion for non-defense scientific research and development
  • Made it easier for minoritys to access capital
  • Implemented tax cuts for about 3.5 million small businesses to help pay for health care for employees
  • Signed a law requiring lenders to verify applicants’ credit history, income, and employment status
  • Signed a law autherizing a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to look out for the people’s interests
  • More private sector jobs were created  in 2010 (while Obama was in office) than during all the Bush years put together

 

Foreign Policy

  • Allowed Cuban Americans unrestricted rights to visit family and send remittances to the island
  • Established a nuclear arms reduction pact with Russia (new START Treaty)

 

Education

  • Helped low-income students pay for college by considerably expanding Pell grants
  • Eliminated subsidies to private lender middlemen of student loans and protect student borrowe
  • Established $12.2 Billion in funding for Individuals With Disabilities Education Act

 

 Social

  • Became the first president to support same-sex marriage
  • Appointed the first Latina woman as a Supreme Court justice (Sonia Sotomayor)
  • Appointed the first chief technology officer
