District Hit by Federal Sequestration
The federal sequestration, mandated across-the-board cuts to federal spending , went into effect on March 1 and will affect the Sequoia Union High School District.
“The federal sequestration is projected to reduce California school district budgets 5.9% in 2012-13 and an additional 8.2% in 2013-14,” according to Marty Fuentes, SUHSD Controller. These cuts will result in reductions of “around $185,000 this year and $240,000 next year,” Fuentes says.
“We’re hopeful the money will be restored shortly and fortunately it doesn’t impact M-A itself very directly,” says Menlo-Atherton Principal Matthew Zito. Nevertheless, Zito says, “I wish the federal government could get their act together.”

love hearing the school’s perspective on what going on (or not going on) in washington!

This is really sad. Times of trouble are the times when education is most imperative.

sometimes i wonder why we don’t just borrow even more massive amounts of money, invest it all in our future (education etc) and hope for the best.

Mandates such as these are very pertinent to everyone that is part of the Sequoia Union Highschool District. It is really great to see something of this sort covered because it gives us a more in depth insight into the workings of our school.

It was really nice to see you localize a national issue so that we understand how it affects us here in Menlo Park. Thanks Tyler!
