Show Goes On Flawlessly, Despite a Set Problem in the Opening Act

At the 7:30 performance of Legally Blonde on Saturday, March 16, a piece of the set fell during the “Omigod You Guys” number.
Though the show otherwise went smoothly, according to actress Liviera Leebong, “a 4-foot-long wooden piece of the Delta Nu house’ exterior roof lining hit the baton and fell off while being lifted up.”
Luckily, Leebong and fellow actress Leanna Moreno had moved out of the way just in time, only barely getting grazed by the falling piece.
The crew was on their toes during the whole event, and would have been well prepared in the event of an accident. Crewmember Elissa Webb shouted out a warning to the actors, the head runner, Lucy, was prepared to call 911 in case of an emergency, and all of the techies were standing by to assist if anyone got hurt.
Fortunately, nothing incredibly bad happened, with Leebong and Moreno escaping with minor scrapes on their legs and arms, respectively.
The falling piece did not disrupt the performance, and Leebong quickly hid it away during the scene, continuing the song without a hitch.
Leebong stated, “Leanna and I actually didn’t realize we had been in danger at all. I think we both had a ‘the show must go on’ attitude so we didn’t let it phase us.”
“I’m just glad no one got hurt because the rigging is a really dangerous part of the theater.”

Leanna and I are both really thankful no one got hurt. We had great techies offstage preparing for the worst. Most of the time the rigging is quite safe when used with proper care but with such a complex set that filled up our rigging, accidents can occur. Our old theatre manager, Ms. Arcuni, engrained in all the techies’ minds the potential risks of theatre and the rigging so we were all very careful. This was just an accident that could have happened anywhere and we are fortunate not to have long standing damage due to it.

I’m glad you’re safe and it’s good to hear the sets are taking on complex tasks even if it means a mistake.

This is the first show we’ve done with such complex rigging. Despite the number of people we have trained on the ropes, there have been few occasions to implement said knowledge. I hope that we can do more shows with fly pieces like these in the future (although maybe just a tad fewer pieces).

I’m so glad everyone is okay! It sounds like the theater group had everything covered extremely well, however, both with being prepared in the case of an emergency and continuing on with the show despite the incident.
