This year, M-A is changing the format of the selection of the junior and senior class presidents by now including the entire sophomore and junior classes in the vote.

Previously, only members of the Leadership class ran for president. Now, however, any sophomore or junior that attends all the required meetings and maintains a GPA of 2.5 or above may be considered for candidacy. He or she must have a running mate for the vice presidency and most importantly, “be prepared… It is a serious responsibility [and] a very active leadership role,” said M-A Student Activities Director Jonathan Senigaglia. The duties of the winners will include planning reunions, Senior Week, prom, the Senior Shirt, along with registering suggestions or concerns of the student body.

The campaign process comprises of a lunchtime meeting on April 23 at lunch, a short speech on M-A Today wherein each candidate can express his or her proposed changes to the school, and a debate on the Green where candidates will address inquiries submitted in advance by the student body. Sophomores and juniors will vote, respectively, for the junior and senior class president/vice president on May 2.

The winners will be announced on May 9.

I think it’s great that they are opening elections up to non-leadership students!
