Girls’ Golf in Full Swing
The Lady Bears defeated Capuchino for the second straight week but narrowly lost to Burlingame in a three-way PAL showdown October 7.
After a 22-stroke victory last week, Menlo Atherton was confident coming into the match. The score at the geese-infested Palo Alto Municipal ended Capuchino 242, Menlo-Atherton 201, and Burlingame 197. After a remarkable round, freshman phenom Xin Fang shot a personal record of 40, just four over par. Senior captain Keiko Wolff was not far behind, finishing with a 50. The remaining starters Vivian Qiu, Kendall Mongrid, Kassidy Iwashita, and Jenna Ebert shot scores of 52, 59, 57 and 62 respectively. With first year player Xin Fang and seasoned veteran Keiko Wolff, the Bears hope to attract attention in PAL and also gain respect for this year’s team.
“Golf is a mental game,” said second year player Kassidy Iwashita. “But I’m still able to focus even with the fun group on the team.” Vivian Qiu, Xin Fang and Jenna Ebert have all made a positive impact as freshmen and hope to progress over their four years at Menlo-Atherton. After a disappointing 2-4 beginning, only time will tell how the Lady Bears will develop throughout the season under the leadership of sole senior Keiko Wolff.
