Off With A Bang

The 2009-2010 volleyball season is underway for Menlo-Atherton. As of October 1, the Lady Bears’ overall record was 12-5. After a “disappointing last season”, the Bears seek redemption. “I am looking forward to winning the CCS championship with this talented team of veterans” declared an excited Sophia Cornew. Returning starters Sophia Cornew, Hannah Branning, Diane Seely, Kate Reardon, Seini Moimoi, and Regina Mullen have battled back since an opening loss to Burlingame, and have come out on top in two straight wins and will be satisfied with nothing less than a PAL championship.
The Bears took on the San Mateo Bearcats on Thursday, October 1. The 7th Woman’s cheering section’s emphatic support helped spur on the red hot Bears to yet another victory. The Menlo-Atherton Bears got off to an early lead with the score of 14-7, and while San Mateo made a small comeback, but M-A wouldn’t budge, winning the first game with the score of 25-17.
The second game was tight midway through the game with a 9-7 score, but the Lady Bears pulled through with a convincing score of 25-11. Sophomore, Hannah Branning had five digs, while returning senior Sophia Cornew had five assists and Diane Seely led the team with three kills.
In the third game, Menlo-Atherton got off to an early lead once again, but in the closing stages, they had to fight for every point. The game came right down to the end, but Menlo-Atherton won yet another set 25-22 to improve their league record to 3-1.
