On a freezing Friday night, the Menlo-Atherton Bears traveled 80 miles to Seaside High, where they suffered bitter disappointment in their 48-20 loss. The Bears won a nail-biter the prior week against Leigh High School 21-20, but Seaside proved to be one of the team’s toughest preseason opponents.

The Spartans opened the game with a 24-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Ronald Saxton to running back Jovahn Lualemana. Menlo-Atherton responded on the following possession when sophomore Willy Fonua dumped a screen pass to sophomore running back Cameron Moody, who finished off the 43-yard play with a touchdown leveling the score at 7-7.

Despite defensive leader Dan Mohr’s eight tackles, the Spartans went on to score 28 unanswered points and soon pulled their starters late in the third quarter. Fonua scored twice more, 10 and 12-yard touchdown runs, but it was too little, too late to salvage a victory.

In the moments of despair, the team found a few glimmers of hope. In the first half, Vince Hagman recovered a fumble after a botched punt return. Sophomore Willy Fonua showed great promise for the future of Menlo-Atherton football through several explosive plays finishing with three touchdowns and 171 total yards.

The Bears (1-4) look to recover this week with a bye before starting league play against Kings Academy in Sunnyvale. Giving up an average of 39.8 points per game this year, the Bears may have trouble stopping Stanford-bound running back Amir Carlisle. Dan Mohr, however, remains confident, “I feel that we are prepared for league.” He later continued to say, “We’re gonna win state, yeehaw!”
