7th Woman shows its spirit at a M-A volleyball game.

If you stop by a M-A girls’ volleyball game, you might notice the overwhelming presence of the 7th Woman. Their slogan “Their game is tighter than their spandex” can be seen on the back of every 7th Woman member’s shirt.

Don’t be confused by the title: the cheering section is made up of at least 30 guys. The founding fathers of this unofficial club are Kyle Kessler and Dominic Mullen. This isn’t Menlo Atherton’s first successful athletic cheering section; the school’s basketball 6th Man cheering section was voted “The Bay Area’s Best Cheering Section” by The San Francisco Chronicle. The cheering section’s school spirit has proved to be advantageous to the team as the Lady Bears have an overall record of 14-7. “It is a big change from last year as we feel like we have a nice support group behind us,” declared Seini Moimoi.

The Lady Bears took on the Sequoia Cherokees at Sequoia on Tuesday. The Bears got off to an early13-0 run as server Sophia Cornew started the game off with a bang. The lady Bears won the first game with a dominating score of 25-7. But the Bears had to earn every point from the Sequoia Cherokee in the second game. After a kill from Sarah Collins, the Bears went ahead 9-6. The Sequoia Cherokees made a late run but it was no match for Sophia Cornew’s 20 assists and Diane Seely’s four kills and the game finished with a score of 25-20. The third game was close until a kill from Diane Seely put the Bears ahead 11-8 and from there, the Bears went on another deadly run to end the third game and the math with a score of 25-14. With the win, the Menlo Atherton bears advance to a league record of 8-3 and have high hope for CCS.
