The M-A girls water polo team made history last weekend by winning the NorCal Invitaional Tournament played at UC Davis. The team continued their dominant 23-1 season, beating No. 2 tournament seeded Campolindo in the sermifinal before ultimately triumphing over powerhouse Monte Vista.
The first day of the tournament was all but a cakewalk for the Lady Bears as they obliterated St. Ignatius 13-5 in the opening round, and then beat St. Francis handily in a 7-2 victory. Standouts included senior Vannessa Lane, who scored 3 goals in both games and had numerous steals and assists. The team as a whole performed well, as 9 different players scored.
The second day proved to be more of a challenge. The girls played No.2 seeded Campolindo in an intense game, with a final score of 5-4. In the Campolindo victory senior Becca Dorst scored 4 goals and tallied 5 steals.
The championship game of the tournament found the Bears faced off against No. 1 seed Monte Vista. Monte Vista featured a talented roster anchored by Maggie Steffens and Kelly Mendoza, both members of the U.S. Junior National Team. Becca and Emily Dorst proved their fortitude once again, supporting the team as they went up 3-1 in the first quarter. Monte Vista posted solo goals in the third and fourth period to tie it, but a goal from M-A junior MJ “seal the deal” O’Neill at 1:30 left in the fourth to bring the contest to an end. She later received “Athlete of the Week” accolades for her performance.
M-A is the first public school from the peninsula ever to win the tournament and continued their 21 game winning streak. They also snapped a two and a half year winning streak by beating Monte Vista. The Dorst sisters lived up to their hype once again; Emily tallied 46 saves on the weekend and Becca scored 9 goals with 12 steals. When asked about the game following their historic victory, Becca could only say “I’m speechless”.
