The Menlo-Atherton Bears basketball squad has been a perennial PAL powerhouse averaging 20 wins over the last three years; and this year will be no exception. With three returning starters in Reed Foster, Jeff Keller, and Marquise Tolson the Bears look to top the 2008-2009 season which culminated with a thrilling yet disappointing CCS loss to St. Francis in the semi-finals leaving the team with a 18-11 record.

Led by Coach Philip White and supported by the illustrious Menlo-Atherton 6th man, the Bears’ season will not disappoint. Junior Shooting Guard McKinley Mathon promises a record of 14-6 with the exception of tournaments and playoffs. Seniors Dominic Mullen and Nils Gilbertson provide depth at the forward spot with height as well as long range shooting. Sophomore guards Jesse and Christian Perkins offer the Menlo-Atherton 6th man a glimpse of the future for the Bears. The post position will be solidified by 6”2 285 lb. Wallbank Mahoni.  The promising young Michael Culhane returns as a member of the CCS semifinalist team from last year and will certainly receive a ample playing time. Juniors Mckinley Mathon, Chace Warren, Stas Della Morte, Zack Cantu add to the already impressive Menlo-Atherton roster, making the Bears chance of success seem even more likely. At the moment, several Bears have been sidelined by injuries and other undisclosed absences, however, by the time PAL competition rolls around they will return.

After a disappointing 55-60 loss to Los Gatos Monday night, the Bears will look to rebound against Sacred Heart Prep Thursday night. It was a relatively somber game on the court, but the always impressive 6th man club lived up to its tremendous reputation by showing up in huge numbers. This Thursday against Sacred Heart will prove to be one of the most crucial and exciting preseason games as countless Menlo-Atherton students plan to dress up in “preppy” to mock the private school down the street.
