The team celebrates a win.

Coming off a disappointing 4-10 league record last year, the boys’ baseball team has definitely shown that they are not a team to mess with. Sporting a 5-1 league record, the Bears have outscored their opponents 150-98 in 18 games, an average of over 8 runs scored per game. Starting catcher Jeff Keller, who will play at Dartmouth next year, leads the team with a .518 batting average and two homeruns. Third basemen Ryan Chilcoat is hitting .400 and Kyle Zirbes is batting .393. On the mound, seniors Patrick Moriarty and Nils Gilbertson lead the Bears with a combined record of 8-3, and ERA’s of 2.48 and 3.73, respectively.

Mike Amoroso, history teacher and the team’s head coach, believes that this year’s team is the most well-rounded team in his head coaching experience. He says that they are “deep in each position, the bench is strong. [We have] talented kids who are benched, but would start on other teams.” Amoroso states that the M-A program will be very talented for years to come and also that the team is a “great group of kids with good chemistry” that plays very well together.

A defining example of their great play would be this past Friday’s exciting win over their rivals, the Burlingame Panthers. The Bears led 7-2 earlier in the game and allowed the Panthers to come back to tie the game. In the bottom of the 8th inning, with Chace Warren on third base, Wally Hansen laid down a perfect suicide squeeze that allowed Warren to score, giving the Bears a thrilling 8-7 victory.
