Bears step onto the field.

This Saturday The Menlo-Atherton Bears football team woke from a long hibernation.

Coming off of a nine-loss season, the Bears are looking for redemption. Even after a disappointing first loss to the Wilcox Chargers, who have become bitter rivals in the past few years, hopes are high for a fresh start this year. Although M-A’s past season ended in a disappointing 1-9 record, the Bears have high aspirations for the rest of the season.

These aspirations seem within grasp as the Bears have acquired a handful of new coaches, including head coach Sione Taufo’ou. Discipline has been a huge part of his new program, as the team has endured early morning practices, double days, and 100-degree heat. The Bears look hopeful and experienced as they return all but three starters, led by linebacker/defensive back hybrid Alofangia Sakalia and linebacker Dan Mohr.

As expected, the defense is the team’s strong point, even after they lost games by 30 points per game. On offense, dual-threat quarterback Willy Fonua leads the team’s explosive offense along with Junior running-backs Cameron Moody and Taylor Mashack. The wide receiver corps is solidified with Seniors Stas Della-Morte, Michael Culhane and Devonte Piper.
