Sports: Girls Volleyball Finishes Undefeated in League, Advances to CCS Playoffs
The M-A girls’ volleyball team defeated Carlmont in four sets on Thursday night, marking the end of a triumphant regular season. This is the second year in a row that the Bears went undefeated in league, finishing with a perfect 14-0 record.
On Tuesday night, the volleyball team honored the four seniors on the team: Mele Moimoi, Saane Fakalata, Katelyn Doherty and co-captain Ali Spindt. They went on to destroy visiting Mills in three sets, 25-13, 25-7, 25-11.
Although the Bears had already clinched the league title, they knew they had to come out strong against their toughest league competition on Thursday to maintain a perfect record. Carlmont had rallied in a hard-fought battle against the Bears earlier in the season, barely losing by two points in the fifth set, and were looking to avenge themselves in their own senior night match.
The first set started out close, with back and forth play that saw the teams tied at 10-10 midway through the set. The Bears pulled ahead with a pivotal five-point run due to a serving streak by Spindt, bringing the score to 21-16. M-A went on to take the set with a comfortable 25-18 victory.
The second set went much like the first, with the Bears up 11-10 to start and finishing 25-21. The Scots rallied back in a competitive third set, winning 23-25. In a decisive fourth, the Bears destroyed the Scots 25-13 and clinched the title as undefeated league champions for the second year running.
M-A’s outstanding performance in league has earned them 3rd seed going into CCS Division I playoffs, and a bye for the first round. They will face 6th seed San Benito on Saturday, November 10 at 7:00pm in Ayer’s Gym for CCS quarterfinals.
