Despite a slow start, the M-A Bears defeated the Woodside Wildcats last night, 21-10, as they honored their seniors in the last regular season game of the year.
The game started in favor of Woodside, as they carried a 10-0 lead into halftime. Despite big plays on both sides of the ball, the Bears were unable to finish drives, and were stopped inside the redzone multiple times. Defensive mistakes proved to hurt M-A as they were unable to put points on the board in the first half.
Despite the first half hardships, the Bears came out revitalized in the second half. Towards the end of the third quarter, quarterback Zack Moore found senior Blake Olsen wide open in the back of the endzone for a touchdown, bringing the Bears within three. The offensive success carried over to the special teams, as on the ensuing kick-off, a fumble by the Woodside return-man resulted in a recovery by M-A inside the redzone.
The next play resulted in another touchdown pass from Moore to Olsen, giving the Bears the lead for the first time of the game.
Woodside began to gain momentum in the beginning of the fourth quarter, as they marched downfield. However, an interception by senior Campbell Roellig gave M-A the ball back on the 30 yard line. The offense prevailed again, as Moore carried the ball over the goal line for a one yard touchdown. The game ended with the score of 21-10.
The Bears showed that they were able to perform while their backs were against the wall, as they turned around a ten point Woodside lead into a solid victory.
“This was a big rival game,” said Moore. “It gives us some momentum going into the [CCS] playoffs, which will be a big help.”
The Bears hope to feed off of this momentum as they continue into the CCS playoffs. They have earned the 4th seed in Division 1, and will battle 5th seeded Sequoia at Coach Parks Field.
