Bear Wrestlers Dominate at First Ever Cross-Division Duals

On Saturday, the M-A Wrestling team hosted the first Cross Division Dual Wrestling Tournament in Ayer’s Gym. The tournament consisted of 3 schools from the PAL Bay Division (M-A, Sequoia, and Half Moon Bay) as well as 3 schools from the PAL Ocean Division (Aragon, Burlingame, and Mills). The event was held so that schools would have the opportunity to challenge other teams from different divisions, whom they wouldn’t face in a normal dual meet. Head coach Peter Wright hopes that this will become an annual event for M-A.

The Bears went undefeated in the tournament, beating Aragon 42-22, Burlingame 46-21, and Mills 48-20. Senior Hector Santana, juniors Austin Wilson, James Smith, and Josh Buttram, and sophomore Donald “Buster” LaHaye were individually undefeated, each winning 3 matches that day. Junior Anthony Andrighetto was also undefeated, winning 2 matches, as well as Sophomore Edward “Bingo” LaHaye, winning 1 match.

Some of the highlights of the tournament include Santana from M-A defeating his Burlingame opponent by fall right as time expired in the 3rd round of a tied match and a Burlingame wrestler defeating M-A freshman Darius Baza in overtime. There was also a high scoring match between Mills and Sequoia wrestlers which was tied at 11 after 2 periods and 13 more points were scored in just the 3rd period (Mills came out the victor by a score of 20 to 15).

The Bears will next be wrestling at “The Bash” at West Valley College in Lemoore, CA on December 28th and 29th.

I’m so glad that the Bears’ wrestling team is already doing so well! Hopefully they can continue this winning streak into the rest of the league season.
