Sports: Volleyball Conquers Los Gatos
In a close back and forth match, M-A pulled through with an exciting victory, coming back from their loss to Menlo the week prior.
The Bears won the first set with a score of 25-22, giving them all the momentum they needed to defeat Los Gatos.
This momentum carried over to the second set for the Bears. For the majority of the set, M-A held the lead, and looked in-sync. The football team came in to support the Bears, and their energy, coupled with that of the 7th Woman Club created a roaring gym. The crowd gave the Bears extra enthusiasm, but towards the end of the set, they lost the lead and with that, their momentum. Los Gatos ultimately came back from a 24-21 deficit to take the set, 26-24, winning 5 straight points. Key mistakes such as miss serves and miscommunication killed the Bears.
The score was now 1-1 going into the third set, and the set remained close the entire time. Los Gatos and M-A were tied at 17-17, but the Bears soon pulled ahead again. However, Los Gatos stormed back and won the set 26-24.
The score was now 2-1, putting Los Gatos one set away from victory. At the beginning of the set, Los Gatos lacked their enthusiasm and drive from earlier. The Bears capitalized and established a quick 18-9 lead. Soon, though, Los Gatos scored 10 out of the ensuing 11 points, bringing the score to a tie at 19. However, the Bears did not want to lose, and won the set 25-21.
In a huddle going into the fifth set, senior Pauli King encouraged her teammates: “lets go out there, be aggressive, and play like we are better than them because we are. Fight as a team. Lets go!”
The Bears fought hard and took the last set, winning the match. Although the Bears did win, there is plenty of room for improvement with certain aspects of their game.
King remarked, “We need to work on staying aggressive even when we have lost a string of points. We have such good talent this year and I know we can do really well!”
It was a tough battle for the Bears, and a satisfying win. M-A will now take on SHP next Tuesday.
