Sports: Volleyball Suffers Heartbreaking Loss to Woodside
In a highly competitive match coming down to the last point, the Bears suffered a heartbreaking loss 3-2. Woodside took the odd sets, and M-A took the evens, ultimately finishing behind.
M-A was without their star senior Pauli King who is injured with a shoulder problem, which left a hole in the Bears attack. Woodside had a star player of their own, who proved to be a menacing threat to the Bears, and forced frequent blunders in M-A’s defense.
Furthermore, in the first set, the Bears were clearly feeling the effects of playing without their star, King. Woodside quickly jumped out to a 10-5 lead and did not look back. Woodside went on to win the set 25-18. Woodisde looked composed and ready to play; their MVP #11 was unstoppable.
In the second set, the Bears came around, but it took some time for them to establish their dominance. Junior Danielle Balestra played amazingly at the net, stopping play after play. Junior Devin Joos was an offensive threat, who had most of the kills for M-A.
The third set was another Woodside Victory. M-A kept it close for the most part, but unforced errors killed the Bears in the end.
The fourth set was positive for the Bears and they won 25-18. Devin Joos looked unstoppable with continuous kills, off of well set passes from teammates. The crowd was roaring for the Bears.
The fifth set was incredibly back and forth. Each time M-A pulled ahead, Woodside retaliated, and vise-versa. Eventually the score was 12-12, then 13-13, then 14-13 in favor of M-A. After that, Woodside won 3 straight points and took the match.
Balestra remarked about not playing with Pauli and the loss: “Although we definitely miss Pauli’s presence and energy that she brings on the court, it wasn’t a lack of skill level tonight. It was a lack of execution.”
This win for Woodside ties them up with M-A and Carlmont for first place in the PAL standings. Next up for M-A is Burlingame at home tonight at 5:30, come out and show your support for your Lady Bears.
