Kate Denend prepares to anchor M-A's JV Girl's 400 yard freestyle team to break the league record.

The Bears wrapped up their regular PAL league season at PAL Finals. They earned two champion titles for the boys and girls junior varsity (JV) teams with record-breaking swims. Both varsity teams came in close second to Burlingame by only a few points.

The JV teams finished a very successful season by remaining undefeated and winning the PAL league with little competition. The boys team won with 579 points, placing almost 100 points over second place winner, Carlmont. The girls won with 774 points, defeating Carlmont by over 300 points.

The varsity girls fought with league winner Burlingame until the last race of the day, the 400 yard freestyle. The Bears entered the last event of the day trailing by only a few points. The ‘B’ relay team, comprised of Claire Haldeman (9), Mary Lane (10), Faith Dunn (9), and Jessica Heilman (12), won the first heat allowing M-A to move into first place by a single point. During the ‘A’ relay in the second heat, seniors Maddie Pont, Sierra Sheeper, Nicole Zanolli ,and Kindle Van Linge represented the Bears. The race was close between M-A and Burlingame, but ultimately Burlingame beat the Bears by less than two seconds. This earned Burlingame the 2014 championship title.

The varsity boys also faced Burlingame’s tough competition and lost with a score of 448-422. Notable swims came from junior Zach Goland, who won the 200 yard freestyle and placed second in the 100 yard butterfly; sophomore Vincent Busque, who placed second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 200 yard freestyle; and junior Gordon Williams, who placed fourth in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 yard butterfly.
