Despite the opinions of many upperclassmen, after a semester at Menlo-Atherton, freshmen have become Bears. However, it is still a well established tradition of leadership to have no freshmen in the leadership classes.  This standard comes from both the inexperience of new freshmen during first semester, making it impossible to have first semester freshmen leadership students, and the already massive leadership population which has little room for expansion. However, 6th period leadership is beginning to expand its view on freshmen roles in leadership with the creation of the all new Freshmen Leadership Club.

Headed by Officers Paige Solomon and Caroline Edwards, the club is intended to allow freshmen to get involved in their school. The club will have a dual purpose, both giving them the skills necessary to head activities and events at Menlo-Atherton, as well as a medium for planning events with the support of the Leadership class. Students will be taught about school rules regarding events, and guided through the process of approving activities. Freshmen will be given the opportunity to create any event they like, although leadership has already chosen several events that the freshmen might be interested in putting together, including an environmental change contest.

The club is also an attempt to resurrect such activities as freshmen dances and freshmen movie night, which have faded away due to lack of attendance in previous years. With freshmen participating in the planning of the event, this would mean that the event would be open to more effective social networking through actual freshmen instead of simply announcements and posters.

The Freshmen Leadership Club is meeting for the first time on (date to be included) in B-21. All freshmen who are interested and missed the December informational meeting should show up to the upcoming meeting
