The Greatest Game No One Saw

Written by Trent Bastian

Menlo-Atherton wins arguably the most important game of the year but no one is around to see it. Does it still count? Of course it does. In fact many Burlingame fans were stunned to see their Panthers lose at home for the first time in four years.

If there were any lingering questions about the quality of play this year, they remain no more. A team which was once at the .500 mark now has a chance to place 3rd or 4th in league play. “It’s plausible” said junior guard Mckinley Mathon who added five points to the 47-46 victory Friday night. When asked about the key to victory, he stated it was all about “sharing the ball, you’ve got to share the ball.” The sharing of wealth worked, and hopefully it’ll continue as the Bears look forward to a bout Wednesday night against the Terra Nova Tigers. The Bears beat the Tigers handily in a 38-27 victory at Oracle Arena that could have easily been mistaken for a pick up game of 1st graders who lack basic fundamentals. After that, the Bears will face the Carlmont Scots who boast a 18-4 record.

Late season runs are something the Bears are very familar with. Last year’s team went to CCS semi-finals only to lose in an exhilarating showdown to the St. Francis Lancers. It shouldn’t be a surpise if the Bears compile a series of key victories at the end of the season. The Bears have been without two key post players for the majority of the year and now they have begun to gel together.
